I had also heard of the ‘Baby Grave Tree’, located in the village of Tampangallo. The Torajans bury their babies, who do not yet have teeth, in the tree. The body of the baby is placed in a hole which has been carved out of the tree and a coconut fibre cover is then placed over the hole. The Torajans believe that the baby will grow up with the tree and reach heaven with the trees growth. The formation of the baby’s skeleton becomes part of the tree., with the bark covering the body. The baby literally becomes part of the tree. The tree has been used for centuries and has an extremely peaceful atmosphere.
